Well...I just made it last night for the first time, but it came out reeeaallly well. So, here is an actual receipe for eight servings!
What You Need
Something big enough to put the pie in!
2 2/3 cups of Idaho Mashed Potates Flakes
4 tbsp of margarine or butter
2 cups of milk (or soymilk or whatever you use that is...milk!)
1 egg, beaten (what that means is you crack an egg...and you BEAT IT with a fork...don't WHISK, BEAT!)
2 2/3 cups of water
1 lb of ground beef [hamburger patties, great substitute! Use about six and just break them apart with your hands after defrosting]
2 fresh tomatoes, diced
1 medium onion, chopped [red onion is easier, it doesn't make you tear up so much]
1 can of tomato paste
1 (15oz) can of tomato sauce
3 tbsp Oregano
Thyme [optional]
Salt
Seasoning Salt
Cayenne Pepper [Or black pepper, it just depends upon how spicy you like it. I use cayenne! ^_^ ]
1 tsp Onion Powder
2 tsp Garlic Powder
2 cloves of garlic, crushed [or you can dice them up really small]
Shredded Cheddar Cheese! [optional]
PREHEAT YOUR OVEN TO 350 DEGREES
First:
To get this all out of the way, dice up the tomatoes and put it in a big enough bowl (not a cereal bowl and you will see why in a second if you do decide to use a plain cereal bowl). Then, open the can of tomato paste and put it with the tomatoes and then add the tomato sauce right after. Mix to get all that gooey, solid tomato paste in there and then add oregano, onion, thyme [optional] and garlic powder plus a *splash* of salt. **Note** If you do add thyme, don't put in a lot just a pinch would do because it has a very potent smell and taste and it might overpower everything else.
Second:
After defrosting your beef, get a large frying pan and brown the meat and add the onion and garlic! Put seasoning salt on the meat and regular salt (but not too much!!) plus the cayenne [or black pepper] (not a lot either if you are not one for spice!)
Third:
While your meat is browning, I would take the time to make those MASHED POTATOES!! Add the cups of water into a medium sized pot and the margarine along with 2 teaspoons of salt, then bring it all to a boil. Once you get that all nice and bubbly, take it off of the heat, add in the milk and then stir in the cups of potato flakes! If you want it creamier, more milk or hot water. ^___^
Fourth:
By now, your meat should be lovely and brown! Drain the meat, put it in whatever you grabbed to put your pie into, and then add the sauce you created in the first step on top of it. Smooth it all out...and then put your mashed potatoes on top of THAT! Smooth it all out over the sauce and meat evenly...Now, you're probably wondering at this point...What about the egg? You get a brush [if you have one] and brush it on top of the mashed potatoes. If you don't have a brush, carefully pour the egg onto the potatoes and smooth it over with the back end of a spoon.
Fifth(optional):
SPRINKLE THE CHEESE ALL OVER!!!!!!!!!!
And last but not LEAST! You stick it into the pre-heated oven and leave it in there for 30 MINUTES! And voila! It should be delightfully ready. If you want to brown it on top, stick it into the broiler for an extra two minutes.
AND THERE YOU GO! Shepherd's Pie!
